Have you noticed your hair thinning? Have you developed a bald spot? Hair loss is a sensitive topic for both men and women. Thinning hair makes patients appear older and has a significant impact on their self-confidence. In the past, patients have tried many invasive procedures to prevent hair loss. However, many patients are candidates for safe, non-invasive platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments.

The process of growing hair involves a cycle of three phases.

During the anagen phase, the hair follicles are actively and rapidly growing. Hair growth during this phase depends on a rich supply of blood and nutrients and can be impacted by health, age and genetics. On average, each hair follicle is in the growth phase for 2-7 years, depending on a variety of factors. After this time, the hair follicle becomes dormant.

The second phase of the hair growth cycle is the catagen phase. During this phase, the hair detaches itself from blood and nutrient supplies and stops growing. This phase is short, lasting only 2-3 weeks. Hairs in this phase are referred to as “club hairs.”

The third and final stage of the hair cycle is the telogen phase. The start of this phase includes a resting period. During this time, club hairs rest in the hair root for about 3 months while new hair begins to form beneath. Eventually, the club hair falls out and gives room for the new hair to begin to grow. This new hair then begins its own life cycle and begins its own anagen phase.

*It is important to note that not all hair follicles are in the same phase at the same time. On average, 50-100 hairs are shed every day. At the same time, 80-90% of your other follicles are growing in the anagen phase. When your hair is healthy this loss goes unnoticed. However, with age, genetics, and environmental factors (stress, medications, diet, etc.) the hair cycle can be affected, leading to less hair follicles in the anagen phase at one time.

Both men and women can experience pattern baldness. Male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) affects 50% of males and is associated with a combination of genetics and hormonal changes that occur during the aging process. This typically presents itself as a receding hairline, loss of hair on the crown or a combination of both.

Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects 25% of women and is of unclear etiology. Typically, FPHL presents itself as an overall thinning of the hair without hairline recession. The extent of FPHL can be graded using the Ludwig scale, grading hair loss from Grade 1-3 (as seen below).

Our blood is made up of different components. These include red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), platelets, and plasma. Each cell has its own role in the body.

Platelets are full of growth factors which are helpful in healing and regenerating tissue. When injected into the scalp, they help regenerate hair follicles through a process called angiogenesis, which is the growth of new blood vessels. With new blood supply and concentrated growth factors, the hair follicles receive more nutrition necessary to grow strong and thick.

It is important that the provider performing PRP treatments utilizes a system that is rich in platelets and does not contain RBCs or WBCs. RBCs and WBCs create inflammation under the scalp and damage the hair follicles. Therefore, it is especially important that your PRP provider is utilizing high-quality equipment that will restore, not damage your hair.

At Sapphire Health and Wellness, we utilize the ECLIPSE PRP® system. This high-quality system ensures that you are receiving concentrated PRP without the presence of RBCs or WBCs. More information on the ECLIPSE PRP® system can be found on their website at

There are many topical and oral medications utilized for pattern baldness in both men in women. However, these medications have side effects and may not be safe for all patients. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a safe, noninvasive procedure that can produce the same effects in 70% of patients.

Sapphire Health and Wellness utilizes high-quality PRP equipment. Utilizing the ECLIPSE PRP® system, we can provide highly concentrated platelets that will have the maximum affect on hair growth. Not all offices utilize high-quality systems and patients should use caution with offices offering cheap rates. In many cases, this means that they are utilizing low-quality PRP systems that do not produce the same effects.

In addition to the PRP, our ECLIPSE® system includes monthly topical and oral hair supplementation. VOTESSE is the only two-part hair health system for both men and women. It is drug-free, biotin-free and includes a daily dose of vitamins and probiotics. Daily use of VOTESSE® has been shown to

  • Improve overall hair appearance
  • Increase hair fullness
  • Improve overall shine and brightness

VOTESSE® can be used with or without PRP treatments. It is only sold by medical professionals and cannot be purchased in store. If you are interested in VOLTESSE, contact our office for a monthly supply @ (480) 219-7810.
